Strawberries protect the stomach against alcohol damage

He knew the properties of strawberries to protect the stomach. Now a team of Italian researchers, Serbian and Spanish has confirmed this protective effect in a mammalian stomach damaged by alcohol. The positive effects associated with strawberry antioxidant capacity provided scientists ethanol (ethyl alcohol) to laboratory rats and found that the gastric mucosa of those who had previously eaten strawberry extract suffered fewer injuries. The team found fewer ulcers in the stomachs of these rats before receiving alcohol for 10 days, fed strawberry extract (40 milligrams per day per kilo of body weight).

Preventing gastric diseases

The conclusions of the work indicate that a diet rich in berries may exert a beneficial effect on the prevention of gastric diseases related to the generation of free radicals and other reactive oxygen species, so that the fruit could attenuate the formation of stomach ulcers in humans . Sara Tulipani, researcher at the University of Barcelona (UB) and co-author of the work, explained that the positive effects of strawberries are associated both their antioxidant capacity as enzymes that activate or own body's antioxidant defenses.

The benefits of eating strawberries

Few calories
Its most abundant component, after water, are the carbohydrates (fructose, glucose and xylitol).

Fiber
Stresses the contribution of fiber, which improves intestinal transit (reduces the risk of getting heart disease or colon cancer). Strawberries fiber lowers blood cholesterol.

Folic Acid
Folic acid is involved in the production of red and white cells in the genetic material synthesis and formation of the immune system antibodies.

Vitamin C
strawberries are very good source of vitamin C and citric acid, salicylic acid, malic acid and oxalic acid, and potassium. Vitamin C is involved in the formation of collagen, bones and teeth, blood cells and enhances the absorption of iron from food and resistance to infection. It also has antioxidant properties.

Potassium
contain much potassium, which is necessary for the generation and transmission of nerve impulses, for normal muscle activity and is involved in water balance inside and outside the cell.
