The good and bad of kissing

Some define it as an act of love expressed through the lips, but experts speak of it as a chemical process that provides benefits and also causes disease . The Kiss, by Jacob Vargas Apaez Omar , maxillofacial surgeon at the Polytechnic Institute Nacional (IPN) is an exchange of salivary fluid composed mainly of water, minerals, proteins, millions of bacteria and other organisms. "Even if a kiss is an act that can take many forms in different parts of the body and various purposes, depending on the region and culture, a passionate consummation is capable of stimulating the central nervous system and triggers a series of chemical processes " , says fellow professor at the IPN.

The kiss, the secretion of dopamine in the body increases , which translates into a greater sense of well being. In addition, a kiss is also able to act against depression and pain, it stimulates the endogenous analgesic system and produces endorphins, which act in response to various stressful situations.

Yet The kiss also has its dark side. In a statement, the doctor warns that all infectious diseases found in the environment can be passed through saliva droplets , such as tonsillitis, pharyngitis, viral meningitis, encephalitis, myocarditis, cold common and the two types of influenza: seasonal and pandemic influenza. Although not common in Mexico, called 'kissing disease' (infectious mononucleosis) can also be transmitted through oral secretions.

However, good oral hygiene : a proper brushing, flossing daily use and regular visits to the dentist, can prevent disease and leave the kissing act freely and benefit of the organism .
