Aromatherapy, possible health risks?

AN-get massaged with essential oils used in aromatherapy is a habit that can be dangerous? The flea in the ear puts a study by the University of Tainan, Taiwan, that the air of the spa where he makes extensive use of aromatherapy and essential oils can be found high levels of potentially harmful environmental pollutants such as organic compounds volatile or ultrafine particles.

STUDY - The warning comes from a study published in Environmental Science and Engineering, for which the researchers tested some fragrances and essential oils derived from Chinese herbs in a controlled environment chamber to determine if and how they gave rise to the formation of organic aerosols secondary. They also conducted some tests in two spas that use aromatherapy products, especially for massages. "The essential oils derived from plants can release volatile organic compounds, and these react with ozone in the air, break down, forming ultrafine-products, organic aerosols, which can irritate the eyes and airways," says Der Tsu-Jen, research coordinator. The analysis results show that virtually all essential oils tested were able to release aerosols of ultrafine particles, less than 50 nanometers in diameter.

PPS - Not only during the aromatherapy massage with essential oils, the air of the rooms of the spa, researchers have found significant amounts of volatile organic compounds and ultrafine particles, equal to ten times faster than normal. Particularly able to "dirty" the air would be the products of lavender, mint, lemon and eucalyptus and second Tsu should be careful, because the volatile compounds released may be irritating to eyes and upper respiratory tract, or even cause headaches and nausea. "The levels of environmental pollutants that are in the air after a massage with essential oils, however, depend heavily on the characteristics of the room where the massage takes place, and especially from ventilation: if you care to ventilate the premises, the potential risks due to a higher concentration of pollutants are reduced a lot, "said Tsu. Therefore, even if the data of the Taiwanese will be confirmed, better to have the foresight to open the windows after using essential oils, such as a bath or a massage home. And it should be noted that aromatherapy products, as well as any other product for the treatment of the body, can cause allergies or rashes: best not to exceed the recommended dose and, before use, test a small area of skin to see how you react.
